There are many third party web monitoring tools that give valuable insight into the strength and effectiveness of your site. Here are a few of our favorites:

1. Open Site Explorer

Open Site Explorer, created by Moz, essentially quantifies how your site is doing in Google’s eyes. The main numbers to focus on are the “Domain Authority,” “Page Authority,” and “Spam Score.”

The Domain Authority quantifies Google’s perception of your overall site — the higher the number the better. It’s important to remember that each incremental increase is exponentially harder to achieve. So moving your site from a 10 to an 11 is easier than moving it from a 20 to a 21.

The Page Authority quantifies Google’s perception of the specific page you searched. It should be noted that Page Authorities will bounce around a little more than Domain Authorities, but the same general rule applies with regard to improving your score.

Spam Scores indicate the issues with your site that may elicit a penalty from Google if you’re not careful. Scores above 3 are often indicative of a site that is spammy.

2. SEMrush

SEMrush is used for keyword research. If you type in a key term that you wish to optimize for, or you think reflects your target market demographic, this tool will offer relative search volume traffic for each term. For instance, if you search “personal injury lawyer,” you’ll likely find that the relative search traffic is much higher than the plural version of the phrase, “personal injury lawyers.” This tool help you understand which key words elicit the greatest relative traffic, and by proxy, can help convert a greater number of leads from the internet.

3. PageSpeed Insights

PageSpeed Insights looks at your domain’s speed — both on a desktop and mobil — platform. You site’s overall speed has a major effect on bounce rate and conversion; so this tool can help point out any issues with site’s loading speed.
